The legendary interior designer tells us about her favourite memory at home.

As part of our interview series, My Happy Home, we sit down with legendary interior designer Kelly Hoppen to find out what tops her list for the worst décor trend of all time — and where she shops for the best bargains.

Multi-award-winning designer and TV personality Kelly Hoppen has over 40 years' experience in the world of interior design. She is the author of nine books, has appeared as an investor on BBC's Dragon's Den, was a guest judge on BBC Two's The Great Interior Design Challenge, and was made an MBE in 2009.

Elsewhere, Kelly has designed the homes, yachts and jets of private clients (such as Victoria and David Beckham), as well as five-star hotels and restaurants around the world. Her colourful portfolio includes the Celebrity Edge cruise ship for Celebrity Cruises, the LUX* Grand Gaube hotel in Mauritius, and a luxury residential tower block in Taiwan.

KH: Being able to completely switch off and savour the important things in life, like spending time with family and friends. Life is often so hectic — I like to keep my home as my sanctuary.

KH: I have lots of precious things that I've picked up at London markets like Colombia Road, Portobello and Kempton; this is my favourite kind of shopping by far. Some of the vintage pieces that I've snapped up for a bargain are now so full of sentimental value that they've become priceless. The wall mirrors from my K by Kelly Hoppen collection with QVC are great affordable statement pieces to give an instant update to any room.

KH: It's got to be Christmas time. It's one of my favourite times of the year to be at home with my family and spend time with my grandson, just playing for hours on end. I love that feeling of being in the moment with the ones I love at home — laughing, playing, and eating amazing food. There's nothing like it.

KH: Don't over analyse. You can spend so much time questioning yourself and going over minute details. If it feels wrong, it probably is — trust your instincts! If you're a naturally creative person, that is, if you're not, perhaps hire a designer and trust their instincts!

KH: Paul Bert Serpette is the flagship market of Les Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen, up on the north side of Paris. It's a must-visit for antiques and incredible, unique pieces. Wandering around there feels like stepping back in time. Closer to home, I can always count on Sunbury Place Antiques Market in Kempton for some unexpected gems, and around Notting Hill there are some incredible shops and market stalls.

KH: I'd love to have a snoop around Snoop Dogg's house!

KH: A photo of my father, Seymour. He passed away when I was young, so his picture is a real treasure to me.

KH: This one is easy. Having a delicious dinner followed by curling up on the sofa with my partner and a good boxset. My idea of heaven!

KH: Spending weekends in the country as I love the outdoors. Wide, open spaces and fresh air are the perfect antidotes to daily work stress. I designed a space outside my new home—a platform with a fire pit and Gervasoni chairs — so we can sit and take in the sunset on warm evenings and feel that connection to nature.

I like my outdoor space to feel like an extension of the house, and my indoor/outdoor rug from my QVC collection is perfect for creating a relaxing space when we're blessed with warm weather (or you can take it indoors when we're not!)

KH: The bedroom or the kitchen, although I'll be the first to admit that it's rarely for cooking! I love to sit and work at the dining table during the day; natural light pours in through the big window so it's a really serene space. It also transitions perfectly to entertaining in the evening, hosting guests around the island and enjoying great food and fabulous wine. The kitchen has to be multifunctional for me, so I kept the design light, airy, and decluttered, with a balance of contemporary features and some more rustic touches.

KH: Chaos! Interiors that are over-designed and excessively busy without any sense of cohesion would go straight into my Room 101. I believe that serenity and balance are such important, calming principles for good design in our already chaotic world.

KH: I have already been lucky enough to design my dream home! It's interesting how your priorities change with age, and the Cotswolds barn is a much calmer, more secluded spot than I would've envisioned for myself many years ago.

There are some things that are permanent treasures: my artwork collection; statement ceramics acquired over the years; and certain pieces that are full of sentimental value. The next dream? To create my perfect beach house — an utterly serene seaside haven.
