Contemporary, luxe and filled with natural light, this extension perfectly combines period architecture and modern design.

Have you ever dreamed of completely transforming your kitchen space? Well, even in your wildest dreams could you ever imagine it looking this good?

Designed for a young family with demanding city careers, London based architecture and interior design studio, Studio Jayga Architects, took on this project with incredible results. You may have even seen the nnU House, as it is known, on Channel 4's Extraordinary Extensions, presented by rapper and property developer Tinie Tempah.

The ground floor of the 1930s semi-detached property in Loughton, Essex, was completely reconfigured to include a brand new kitchen extension – and we can’t stop admiring how beautifully modern and bright it is.

When it came to the brief, the family were looking to create a space that allowed for open-plan living, with a connection to their existing 300ft long lush garden being a must.

The ground floor of the original house consisted of three separate spaces towards its rear. There was a dated narrow kitchen, a cramped windowless living room, and an extension that was originally fitted in the 1980s that served as the dining room of the home.

All three of these rooms sat on one level, however, this was almost a metre above where the garden was. This meant the only way to get access outside was by traversing down a steep set of steps each time. And because of an outbuilding that was located particularly close to the property, this ultimately obscured the view outside to the garden and significantly reduced how much natural light from outside could reach through.

Studio Jayga Architects proposed removing the outbuilding completely by demolishing it and then reconfiguring the existing spaces at the back of the home. This would create a split-level design inside, instead of outside like it was before, using steps within. A pair of arched metal doors would then lead out to the garden without the issue of different levels.

A linear rooflight was also installed between the existing house and new extension to link the two internal spaces together and allow natural light to filter through into the house.

One of our favourite features is the up-and-over frameless glass box – designed as a unique curved window seat, it cantilevers out and provides uninterrupted views both out into the garden and up into the sky.

The bespoke green kitchen units and island were designed by Studio Jayga Architects to echo the soft curves of the arched doors and curved glass box. With a wraparound elliptical kitchen island finished off with a colourful terrazzo worktop, could you imagine having your cup of morning coffee or breakfast here?

The wall units were taken up to the ceiling to maximise the amount of storage space that could be provided, and natural hues were used to bring nature and the colours from the garden inside.

The kitchen is finished off with gold detailing, as seen in the gorgeous globe lights hanging above the island and the brushed gold tap.

The extension has been cladded with timber, which was charred on-site using the ancient Japanese technique of 'shou-sugi-ban'.

And finally, are you wondering exactly why it's called nnU House? It's named in line with the geometric shapes of the two arched doors ('nn') and the up-and-over glass box ('U') when viewing the house from the garden.
