Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has brought the Dahmer case back into the public spotlight. But instead of just focusing on Jeffrey Dahmer and his many crimes, Monster takes this story a step further, expanding on who his victims were and detailing what happened after his capture, trial, and death.
Much like the rest of this case, Monster is fairly accurate when it comes to portraying what happened at the end of Dahmer’s life. Here is exactly what happened.
Two months after 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone had escaped from Dahmer’s apartment only to be returned by the police, Dahmer met 32-year-old Tracy Edwards. As soon as Edwards entered Dahmer’s apartment, he became suspicious due to its smell. Dahmer handcuffed Edwards and held him hostage at knifepoint, forcing the other man to watch the The Exorcist III with him. In an effort to keep Dahmer from attacking him, Edwards recalled that he continuous assured the other man that they were friends. When he noticed that Dahmer was distracted, he made him move. Edwards punched the killer and ran from his apartment.
At 11:30 p.m. on July 22, 1991, Edwards flagged down two police officers, Robert Rauth and Rolf Mueller. He told them that a man had tried to kill him and led him to Dahmer’s apartment. Dahmer permitted them to come inside, and one of the officers searched Dahmer’s bedside table, looking for the key to Edwards’ handcuffs. That’s when he noticed the Polaroids. The photos featured several bodies in various states of dismemberment. Both officers then overpowered and captured the serial killer. Once he was restrained, they found the head of one of Dahmer’s victims in the refrigerator — a sign of the horrors hidden in this apartment.
Once Dahmer was arrested, he quickly admitted to his crimes. While he was being questioned by officers, he said, “I created this horror and it only makes sense I do everything to put an end to it.” In that same interview, he confessed to murdering 16 boys and young men in Wisconsin as well as one victim — Steven Hicks — in Ohio.
During his trial, Dahmer was ruled to be sane and sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years for the first two counts of murder. The remaining 13 counts carried a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment plus 70 years. He was also given a 16th life imprisonment in Ohio for the murder of Hicks. The death penalty was not an option because it had already been abolished by the state of Wisconsin.
Though Dahmer was given 16 life sentences, he spent very little time in prison. On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was assigned a work detail with two other inmates: Jesse Anderson and Christopher Scarver. Both were also convicted murderers, Anderson for killing his wife and Scarver for killing a Wisconsin Conservation Corps employee. Scarver first attacked Dahmer with a metal bar before attacking Anderson. He would later claim that God had told him to kill both Dahmer and Anderson. Dahmer died of his injuries an hour after the attack, and Scarver was given two additional life sentences.
The Oxford Apartments, which is where 12 of Dahmer’s 17 victims were murdered and dismembered, no longer exists. Located at 924 North 25th Street in Milwaukee, Wis., the residents of the building were forced to leave shortly after Dahmer’s arrest, and the complex was torn down in November of 1992. To this day it remains a vacant lot. There have been plans over the years to turn the space into a park, garden, or memorial honoring the victims of this horrific chapter of American history. So far, none of those plans have materialized.
