Three million homes could be going without a tree this year.

Brits are being urged to pre-order their real Christmas trees early, after reports last month found there could be a tree shortage due to ongoing disruption in the supply chain.

According to Primrose, three million homes could be going without a tree this year unless they choose to buy British. It may only be October, but their data found the demand for Christmas trees is increasing earlier every year. In fact, there were 1.1 million searches for 'Christmas trees' last month alone — up 102 per cent compared to September searches in 2018.

'With a pandemic festive season keeping people apart last year last year, it's no surprise that there's an early demand for Christmas cheer in 2021,' says Evie Lane, Gardening Expert at Primrose. 'The best advice we can give to customers is to stick to British and for customers to pre-order their tree early to guarantee the Christmas they're hoping for.'

According to Christmas Tree World, a lack of HGV drivers coupled with Brexit and the worldwide pandemic may see retailers struggle to 'fulfil the demand for real trees' over the festive period.

While it's too early to predict, Ben Wightman, an analyst at Christmas Tree World, said the shortage could bump up sales for artificial styles. He told Wales Online: 'Brexit is looking like it might be the true Ebenezer Scrooge of Christmas. There have been rumours of a shortage of food and toys ahead of Christmas mostly due to logistical problems at borders.

'Last year, there was an issue with the mink cull in Denmark meaning that there could be a shortage of trees being imported into the UK. If something similar to this came up again it could become difficult to fulfil the demand for real trees, which would lead to a massive increase in demand for artificial trees. It is still very early to predict whether we could be in a similar situation to what we were last year, but the early signs don't look too hopeful.'

Elsewhere, Balsam Hill has seen sales of artificial Christmas trees up by 73 per cent in August compared to last year, suggesting that Christmas 2021 will be the most successful festive season yet. Visitors to the website has risen by 145 per cent, with searches for Christmas trees booming.

Mac Harman, founder CEO of Balsam Hill, said: 'It's clear that the UK is looking ahead to festive celebrations even earlier than usual. With trees and decorations being snapped up even earlier than in 2020, Christmas 2021 looks set to be one of the most anticipated and special we've ever had.'
