This is what a happy kitchen looks like...

With a wonderful yellow and green colour scheme, this delightfully happy, inviting cottage kitchen is the perfect example of how to combine personality and charm in kitchen design.

This big colourful kitchen is in a small fisherman's cottage, located in the beautiful seaside town of St Ives, Cornwall.

The kitchen is created from cupboards that once made up a display in deVOL's Classic English showroom at Cotes Mill. Unsurprisingly, it's the Scullery Yellow deVOL paint colour – that's not too bright but very mellow and alluring – that encapsulates the mood in this warm space.

'We wanted a big kitchen in a small cottage, we wanted eating, seating and prepping, we wanted a bit of vintage, we wanted simplicity and glamour and we also wanted to show that these cupboards are forever. You can take these pieces from home to home and give them a whole new lease of life with just a fresh lick of paint,' deVOL explains.

With views out to the bright blue sea, the yellow hues look even better come morning thanks to the famous luminous light that bathes St Ives. Plus, rooflights enable the cooking and dining space to be flooded with natural light.

The worktops – cherry hardwood with eight years of patina and a very well figured slab of marble – were kept the same, bar the handles which were changed.

At the centre of the kitchen is a functional, vintage prep table with a chippy green paint finish, plus some added brass castors. The bespoke green paint, seen on the tall cupboard and shelves, was chosen for a cohesive look.

With a little pantry, big Smeg fridge and Lacanche range cooker, this kitchen ticks all the boxes for function and aesthetic.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a dining table, which is the main reason why sisal carpets were chosen for the flooring, adding warmth and a naturalness. 'The casual end of the room has leather club chairs, so a carpet felt more inviting,' deVOL adds.
