This Is the Luxury Furniture Trend You Should Try in 2022, According To a Home Editor

So we've seen vintage-inspired furniture trends like Newstalgia and Avant Basic blowing up Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok. Yet, I have to admit: This all feels a little transient, yeah? Don’t get me wrong—I’m here for the nostalgic look. Not only is it edgy and retro in all the right ways, but it can bring a warm, sentimental aura to your home (which is something we all need as we enter yet another year of this COVID-19 carnival). But before you redo everything to fit an of-the-moment aesthetic, I'd like to encourage you to ease into things with one statement piece. Particularly, a piece of furniture that's trending yet has timeless lines, so you can update its surroundings—new paint, new accessories—and a decade later, it still feels fresh. Intrigued? Welcome to the wonderful world of jewel tones.

Jewel-toned pieces—think ruby, emerald, sapphire, amethyst and a smattering of gold tones—are the interior equivalent of Harry Winston, and they’re growing increasingly popular these days, according to Wayfair’s 2022 Design Trends Report. “The energy of these colors—in all of their saturated glory—is recalibrating the palettes for interiors, replacing the ‘greige,’ milky, and muted tones of the past few years,” Jane Landino, creative head of London-based Taylor Howes Designs tells Sotheby's.

If you’re hesitant, I get it—the sheer *drama* of these hues can feel, uh, overwhelming (especially if you’re a classic minimalist like myself). But the trick to nailing this look is all in how you style it. “Velvets and satins translate beautifully in jewel tones because of the sheen and richness of the fabric—and woven patterns also help to create a timeless feel,” says designer Karen B. Wolf.

In the photo above, Wolf juxtaposes a jewel-toned sofa against an elegant, marble fireplace and white finishes to create a bold yet elevated look. “Deep navy hues are a new neutral, so upholstering a large sofa in a jewel tone like navy is a safe way to create a base to pop other accents off of and to ground the room,” she explains.

The takeaway? You can create a classic look by using a single piece of jewel-toned furniture and surrounding it with minimalist finishes, fixtures and decor. Or, you can always say f*ck it and pepper your home with bold statement-makers for an audaciously glamourous façade. Either way, here are some of my favorite pieces to consider.

So, we’ve covered vintage, minimalist and traditional looks, but what about boho? Here you go. To say I’m obsessed with this bed’s velvet aubergine finish is the understatement of the year. Plus, I love how its silhouette brings a playful, artistic vibe to the classic sleigh bed. Go for an eclectic look by hanging a vintage gallery wall, or surround it with clear acrylic tables to let the color speak for itself.

I would literally donate a kidney if it meant squeezing this credenza into my tiny NYC apartment. Aside from it’s insane dark sapphire finish, I love how this piece juxtaposes vintage distressing on its veneers against antique brass and caviar black finishes for an original, classic design. I know, I know it’s pricey. But this design is the classic Chanel of furniture.

If you’re someone like me, your style probably teeters between classic vintage and modern luxe. Enter: this fabulous green sofa. Its midcentury modern silhouette keeps things current, while the plush velvet upholstery showcases the best of vintage glam. Plus, it’s just under $2,000, which is basically unheard of when it comes to trendy sofas (AKA snag this one before it’s out of stock).

Feel like your living room needs a lil’ something-something? Say no more. This one combines aquamarine and lapis blue to create an intricate geometric pattern. However, don’t let the “garden seat” thing fool you—this is a delicate piece that’s handcrafted from capiz shells. You’d be better off sticking your toaster oven outside in the rain than using this guy as an outdoor stool.

This one goes out to anyone who loves contemporary forms and funky colors. As if this chair’s curve appeal wasn’t enough, its velvet plum purple upholstery makes this an eye-catching accent. Use it at the head of your dining table for a statement, or stick it in a dull corner for a vibrant pop.

ICYMI, green is the hottest color in home right now. But if you’re sick of seeing velvet everything, everywhere, I getcha. I’d recommend going with a non-upholstered piece like this emerald green bar stool for a more refined, Scandinavian look.

Lucite, lacquer and brass—need I say more? OK, twist my arm: This desk’s lacquered, rose quartz finish brings a subtle pop of color, while its modern silhouette features dramatic details to keep things interesting. Perfect for a retro-luxe look.

Speaking of Lucite, I love how this aquamarine chair takes a playful approach to a contemporary finish. Plus, its rounded lines recall the classic French chairs of the early 1900s, and if you’re looking to mix old with new, *this* is how you do it.

Simple yet sophisticated, this slate blue velvet upholstered bench is just begging to be placed in your entryway. And if you’re not feeling this color, it’s available in dusty rose (another fabulous jewel-toned finish).

Not only does its thin, gold-finished frame offer a pop of glam, but the emerald green marble top brings an edgy mixed-metal vibe.

Last but not least, a jade velvet pouf that can work for minimalists and maximalists alike. You can add this little accent under a console table for a subtle pop of color or style it with your living room sectional to draw some visual interest.
